We have the best time says lead guitarist and vocalist Steve Wettig known as Steve Zero during the heyday of the Sharks back in the s. We ll talk about how we should go back on tour and we ll look at each other for a second like we re going to do it and then start to laugh. It s just a fleeting moment. While none of the Sharks really want to get back together full time they do have a lot of fun at their reunion shows which they ve been doing for the past decade or so maybe once or twice a year. And so do their fans. Related Stories Recovery becomes art form Some breakup Slimfit . Offering help for holi. Christmas concert brid. MUSIC REVIEW Shiny To. We knew the Sharks was a special thing Wettig says. And it s not just about us. People are reminiscing when we do the reunion shows. They hear a tune and they think about where they were and what they were doing who they met. We always ask the establishment to open the doors about an hour early. It s a chance for people to talk. It s a reunion for them too. It s a time warp kind of thing. The band will be reuniting Friday for a show at the Chameleon. And this time they are asking fans to bring in non perishable food items for the Water Street Rescue Mission where Wettig has volunteered for the past years. We re asking people to bring in as much as they can Wettig says. There will be a place in the lobby for them to drop it off. Times are tough people are having a rough time feeding their families. Surprisingly this marks the first time the band which relentlessly toured throughout the region back in the s has played the Chameleon. Their hangout back in the day was the Village Nightclub where most of their reunion shows have been held in the past. They played there so often they were practically the house band. Wherever they are held the shows draw big crowds and not everyone is a fan from way back. Related Topics Water Street Resc. Chameleon Club concerts rock music Village Nightclub Sam Lugar Shea Quinn Steve Wettig Doug Phillips Mark Showers Elektra Records food drive We did a show in Hershey on Black Friday and it was loaded with young people Wettig recalls. They were transfixed. But then the Sharks know how to play a room. We played intensely for ten years on a grueling schedule Wettig says. We had a fan base all over from New Jersey to Philadelphia to New York City. In addition to Wettig the band includes Shea Quinn bass vocals Sam Lugar guitar vocals Doug Phillips drums and Mark Showers keyboards . The Sharks were always hugely popular with fans but mysteriously not with Elektra Records which signed the group after the won the MTV Basement Tapes Competition in . Since the Sharks weren t their own discovery the record label fulfilled their promotional obligation but never promoted them and even charged them to distribute the album. And back then unlike today record companies held all the cards. But the band doesn t spend too much time wondering how things could have been different. What ifs are a waste of time says Wettig. Whatever happened back then is in the past. And they are looking toward the future. The band is writing new songs and they have plans to release a CD in the spring. We re going to start recording after the first of the year he says. The chemistry we had when we were writing tunes long ago we ve still got those patterns says Wettig who notes that Lugar has written four or five songs they are very excited about. The songs Wettig says have more complexity than they did back in the s. They are telling a story they make you think. You can apply to your own life. I think they ve matured in that way Wettig says. Still he says things haven t changed all that much. We might be more mature these days we might be leading different kinds of lives but when you get a bunch of boys in a room it s always the same thing.
